SPAR’s passion for sustainable growth is achieved through transformational retailing, and creates a chain of empowerment from the ground up.
SPAR aims to transform retailing with assistance and training that nurtures the potential of small-scale farmers and business owners. Through its chain of empowerment, SPAR’s goal is to help these individuals gain new skills and resources that further the work they’ve already accomplished.
Leydah Sekgobela, a successful farmer in Limpopo’s Mopani district, already knew how to work diligently and care for her crops from her industrious mother. But Spar’s Rural Hub Project gave her and six other small-scale farmers specialised training, growing plans and mechanisation that took their businesses to the next level. Leydah has now moved into commercial farming and employs 16 people.
SPAR’s assistance also helped Dan Maluleke’s business by conducting feasibility studies and providing produce. Maluleke started out running a family-owned general dealer in Soshanguve, but now owns 11 Spar stores and employs more than a thousand people.
